Application Process
1. Surface Preparation
Surface Condition: The surface must be clean, sound, and free from any contamination including dirt, dust, loose materials, debris, oil, grease, curing compounds, or any substance that could impair adhesion.
Cleaning Process: Thoroughly wire brush or mechanically abrade the surface to remove all loose particles and provide a suitable key for adhesion. For heavily contaminated surfaces, use high-pressure water jetting.
Oil & Grease Removal: Any oil, grease, or other contaminants must be completely removed using appropriate degreasing solvents. Clean the area thoroughly and allow to dry.
Crack and Damage Repair: Inspect the surface carefully for cracks, holes, and damaged areas. Repair all defects using suitable crack fillers or polymer modified repair mortar such as Berger Advanced Latex Plus. Allow repairs to cure completely before waterproofing.
Leak Source Elimination: Identify and address all sources of water leakage including concealed pipe leaks, drainage issues, and other water ingress points. All active leaks must be stopped before waterproofing application.
Substrate Strength: Ensure the substrate is structurally sound. Very weak, friable, or failing plaster must be removed and replaced with new, properly cured plaster. Do not attempt to waterproof over compromised substrates.
Moisture Condition: The substrate must be properly dampened to achieve a saturated surface-dry (SSD) condition before application. The surface should be damp but with no standing water or free moisture. This prevents the substrate from absorbing water from the waterproofing coating, which could affect curing and performance.
2. Mixing Procedure
CRITICAL – Component Ratio: Latex Shield 2K is supplied as a pre-portioned kit with precisely measured components. DO NOT alter the ratio or mix partial quantities. Always use complete kit contents to ensure proper performance.
Mixing Sequence: Pour the entire contents of Component A (liquid polymer) into a clean mixing container. Then gradually add Component B (powder) to the liquid while mixing continuously. Always add powder to liquid—adding liquid to powder will create lumps and prevent proper mixing.
Mixing Equipment: Mix using a low-speed mechanical stirrer (pneumatic or electric drill with paddle attachment, minimum 1kW) at 250-300 RPM. High-speed mixing should be avoided as it can entrain excessive air.
Mixing Duration: Mix continuously for 3-5 minutes until a smooth, homogeneous, lump-free slurry is obtained. Ensure complete dispersion of powder into the liquid with no dry pockets or lumps remaining.
Consistency Check: The properly mixed material should have a smooth, creamy consistency suitable for brush or trowel application. The slurry should be thick enough to build adequate film thickness but fluid enough for easy application.
Important: Prepare only the amount that can be applied within 30-45 minutes (pot life). Do not attempt to remix material that has begun to set. Plan work in manageable sections.
3. Application Method
First Coat Application:
Apply the mixed Latex Shield 2K slurry using a stiff brush, trowel, or suitable applicator. Work the material thoroughly into the substrate, filling all pores and ensuring complete coverage. Pay particular attention to corners, joints, construction joints, and areas around penetrations.
For horizontal surfaces (terraces, roofs): Use trowel or squeegee to spread material evenly.
For vertical surfaces (walls): Use brush or trowel, working from bottom to top.
Apply a uniform coat at approximately 1.5mm wet film thickness. Avoid creating excessively thick coats in one application as this can lead to cracking during curing.
Critical Areas Treatment:
– Corners and junctions: Apply additional material and work thoroughly into angles
– Around pipes and penetrations: Create a fillet or round edge for better waterproofing
– Construction joints: Ensure complete coverage and good penetration
– Cracks: Work material into cracks and build up slightly over crack areas
Drying Time: Allow the first coat to dry for 4-6 hours at 30°C before applying the second coat. Drying time may vary depending on ambient temperature, humidity, and air circulation. In cooler or more humid conditions, allow longer drying time.
Second Coat Application:
Apply the second coat in a similar manner to the first coat, ensuring complete coverage. For optimal waterproofing, apply the second coat in a direction perpendicular or at an angle to the first coat to ensure any missed areas are covered.
Additional Coats (If Required):
For water retaining structures such as swimming pools, water tanks, or areas subject to high hydrostatic pressure, apply a third coat for enhanced protection. Allow proper drying time between each coat.
Final Film Thickness: The total dried film thickness after 2-3 coats should be approximately 2-3mm for optimal waterproofing performance.
4. Curing and Protection
Initial Curing: Protect the applied coating from rain, water exposure, direct sunlight, and mechanical damage for at least 24-48 hours after application of the final coat.
Moist Curing (Critical for Performance):
After initial setting (24 hours), begin moist curing by lightly spraying water on the surface. Keep the coating continuously moist for 7 days by spraying water 3-4 times daily. This moist curing is essential for:
– Proper hydration of cementitious components
– Development of full strength and waterproofing properties
– Prevention of premature drying and microcracking
– Achieving optimal durability and longevity
Water Retaining Structures: For swimming pools and water tanks, after the 7-day curing period, fill with water and allow to stand for 7 days. Drain, inspect for any issues, and refill if satisfactory.
Protection During Curing:
– Protect from rain during first 24 hours
– Protect from direct sunlight (use shade cloth if necessary)
– Prevent foot traffic during curing period
– Do not apply under very hot conditions (above 40°C) or very cold conditions (below 10°C)
– Avoid application when rain is forecast within 24 hours
Final Inspection: After complete curing, inspect the entire waterproofed surface for:
– Uniformity of coverage
– Any missed spots or thin areas
– Proper coverage at critical areas (corners, penetrations, joints)
– Any visible defects requiring touch-up
5. Top Coating (Optional)
For aesthetic finish or additional UV protection:
– Interior surfaces: Apply tile adhesive and tiles, or suitable decorative finishes
– Exterior surfaces: Apply exterior paint, texture coating, or tile finishes
– Allow proper curing of Latex Shield 2K before applying top finishes
– Ensure compatibility of top coating materials with the waterproofing system
Critical Application Precautions
Mandatory Don’ts
DO NOT mix partial quantities. The kit is pre-portioned for optimal performance. Mixing partial amounts will alter the polymer-to-cement ratio and compromise waterproofing effectiveness.
DO NOT add extra water for dilution. The consistency is pre-determined for proper application and performance. Adding water reduces strength and waterproofing properties.
Always add powder to liquid, vice-versa NOT recommended. Wrong sequence creates lumps and prevents achieving a homogeneous mixture.
DO NOT expose the applied substrate to water until it is completely cured. Premature water exposure will wash away the coating and prevent proper curing.
Must be protected from direct sunlight at green stage of application. Rapid moisture loss prevents proper curing and can cause cracking.
DO NOT attempt to reactivate or remix material that has begun to set. Once pot life is exceeded, the material cannot be reconstituted. Discard and prepare fresh mixture.
DO NOT apply on surfaces with active water leakage. All water sources must be stopped before waterproofing.
DO NOT apply when rain is forecast within 24 hours. Rain on fresh coating will wash it away and ruin the application.
Application Best Practices
– Work in moderate temperatures (10°C to 35°C) for best results
– Plan work in sections that can be completed within pot life
– Maintain consistent application thickness across the surface
– Ensure adequate ventilation when working in enclosed spaces
– Use clean tools and mixing equipment for each batch
– Test application on a small area first for familiarization
– Follow manufacturer’s guidelines precisely for critical applications
– Document application dates and conditions for warranty purposes
Understanding Two-Component Technology
Why Two Components?
The two-component system provides several critical advantages over single-component waterproofing products:
Component Stability: Separating the liquid polymer from the cementitious powder prevents premature reaction during storage, ensuring long shelf life and fresh, reactive materials at time of use.
Controlled Performance: Mixing activates the chemical reactions at the point of application, allowing the materials to develop their full properties on the substrate rather than in the container.
Optimal Polymer Loading: The two-component system allows for higher polymer content than possible in single-component products, providing superior flexibility and waterproofing performance.
Consistency and Quality: Pre-portioned kits eliminate mixing errors and ensure every application has the same optimized ratio of components, delivering consistent, predictable results.
How the System Works
Component A (Liquid Polymer):
The acrylic polymer emulsion provides flexibility, adhesion, and waterproofing properties. It acts as a binder, coating cement particles and creating a flexible network within the cured coating.
Component B (Cementitious Powder):
The carefully formulated blend of Portland cement, graded aggregates, and additives provides structural integrity, durability, and chemical resistance. The cementitious matrix creates the body and thickness of the coating.
Synergistic Action:
When mixed, the polymer modifies the cementitious matrix, creating a hybrid material that combines:
– Waterproofing effectiveness of polymers
– Strength and durability of cement
– Flexibility to accommodate movement
– Chemical resistance and protective properties
– Excellent adhesion to substrates
Curing Mechanism:
The coating develops properties through two simultaneous processes:
1. **Hydration**: Cement reacts with water to form strong crystalline bonds
2. **Film Formation**: Polymer particles coalesce to create a continuous, flexible waterproof film
This dual curing mechanism ensures the coating develops both strength and flexibility, creating superior waterproofing performance that outlasts single-component systems.
