Application Process
1. Surface Preparation
Cleaning: Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, loose particles, grease, oil, and other contaminants. Remove all loose material using wire brush or high-pressure water jet.
Repairs: Repair all major cracks, holes, and structural defects. Fill cracks wider than 2mm with suitable crack filler or mortar. Allow repairs to cure completely before proceeding.
Surface Condition: The substrate should be structurally sound, stable, and properly cured. New concrete should be at least 28 days old. Moisture content should be below acceptable levels.
2. Priming (If Required)
For highly porous or absorbent surfaces, apply a suitable primer (such as Berger HomeShield Epoxy Primer) to seal the surface and improve adhesion. Allow primer to dry completely before applying PU Koat.
3. Joint & Crack Treatment
Crack Filling: Fill all cracks and joints with Berger HomeShield Jointseal GG or suitable polyurethane sealant. This prevents crack propagation and provides additional waterproofing at vulnerable points.
Expansion Joints: Treat expansion joints with appropriate flexible sealant to accommodate structural movement while maintaining waterproof integrity.
4. PU Koat Application – First Coat
Mixing: Stir PU Koat thoroughly before use to ensure uniform consistency. The product is ready to use – no mixing with hardeners or catalysts required.
Application: Apply the first coat of PU Koat using high-quality brush or roller. Apply uniformly in one direction, ensuring complete coverage without missed spots.
Coverage: Maintain recommended wet film thickness for optimal waterproofing performance. Typical consumption is approximately 1.5-2 kg per square meter for complete waterproofing system.
Drying Time: Allow the first coat to dry completely (typically 6-8 hours under normal conditions) before applying subsequent coats.
5. Reinforcement (Optional but Recommended)
Mesh Reinforcement: For enhanced crack-bridging and strength, embed a polyester mesh or fiberglass fabric into the first coat while it is still wet. Ensure the mesh is fully embedded without air pockets.
Critical Areas: Pay special attention to corners, edges, joints, and areas around pipes, drains, and other penetrations. Apply additional reinforcement at these vulnerable points.
6. PU Koat Application – Second Coat
Apply the second coat perpendicular to the first coat direction for maximum coverage and seamless membrane formation. Ensure uniform thickness and complete coverage.
7. PCC Screed (Optional – For Heavy Traffic Areas)
For areas subject to foot traffic or mechanical stress, a thin PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) screed layer can be applied over the PU Koat to provide mechanical protection while maintaining the waterproofing membrane beneath.
8. Final Coat
After PCC screed (if applied) has cured and grid cutting is completed, apply a final coat of PU Koat to seal the entire surface, including any cuts or joints made during screed application.
9. Curing & Protection
Curing Time: Allow the final coat to cure completely (typically 24-48 hours) before exposure to water or foot traffic. Full cure may take 7 days.
Protection: Protect the applied coating from rain, water, and mechanical damage during the curing period. Avoid walking on the surface until fully cured.
10. Quality Check
Visual Inspection: Inspect the completed waterproofing membrane for uniform coverage, proper thickness, and absence of pinholes or defects.
Water Test: After complete curing, conduct a water ponding test by creating a water pool on the surface for 24-48 hours to verify waterproofing effectiveness.
11. Safety & Storage
Safety: PU Koat is water-based and non-toxic, making it safe for residential applications. Ensure adequate ventilation during application. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. If contact occurs, wash immediately with clean water. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Protect from frost and freezing temperatures. Do not store near food items.
Comparison: PU Koat vs Conventional Methods
PU Koat vs Traditional Screed
Traditional Screed Disadvantages:
- Heavy layer creates significant load on roof structure
- Does not provide waterproofing – cracks develop allowing water penetration
- Costly at approximately ₹50 per sq. ft.
- No warranty provided
- Requires skilled masons who often lack proper waterproofing knowledge
PU Koat Advantages:
- No additional load on roof structure
- Superior waterproofing with crack-bridging up to 350% elongation
- Cost-effective at approximately ₹35 per sq. ft.
- 10-year performance warranty
- Easy application by any painter with brush
PU Koat vs APP Membrane
APP Membrane Disadvantages:
- Black bitumen-based – absorbs heat, increasing room temperature and electricity costs
- Requires heat for application, creating pollution and fire hazard
- Needs trained applicators – quality depends on applicator skill
- Creates load on roof structure
- If damaged, entire membrane must be redone (cannot repair sections)
- Not sustainable (produced from crude oil)
PU Koat Advantages:
- White color reflects heat, reducing surface temperature by up to 10°C
- Cold application – no heat, pollution, or fire risk
- Easy application by any painter without specialized training
- No additional load on roof
- Sectional repairs possible – damaged areas can be spot-repaired
- Eco-friendly, sustainable, Green Pro Certified
